The 18th annual Award and Induction Dinner of The National Academy of Popular Music/Songwriters Hall of Fame was held in New York City in 1987.

Nine individuals were inducted this year, including the legendary songwriting tandem of John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney and collaborators Carole King and Gerry Goffin. Award recipients included Jerry Herman (the Johnny Mercer Award), Lou Levy (the Abe Olman Publisher Award) and Jerry Wexler (the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award).
