The 12th annual Award and Induction Dinner of The National Academy of Popular Music/Songwriters Hall of Fame was held in New York City in 1981.
This year's inductees were Cy Coleman, Jerry Livingston and Johnny Marks. E.Y. “Yip” Harburg received the Johnny Mercer Award, Tony Bennett was presented with the Sammy Cahn Lifetime Achievement Award and Chuck Berry was given the first-ever Hitmaker Award.
