Sam Opoku is a Ghanaian-American Afro soul and R&B artist who immigrated to the United States at the age of 8 after his mother won the visa lottery-incredible achievement considering that the chance of selection is less than 1%. His family’s move involved considerable sacrifices, driven by the pursuit of great opportunities and a better life. Navigating between cultures, Sam embraced musical influences from both worlds, cultivating his unique and rich sound. He learned to speak English during recess on the playground and through Saturday morning cartoons, experiences that fueled his passion for the arts. This enthusiasm propelled him to become a two-time Poetry Out Loud champion during his high school years, sparking his interest in songwriting and music
Throughout his career, Sam has achieved notable milestones. His song “Yellow” was featured on the popular Netflix show Ginny & Georgia. Additionally, he has performed extensively throughout Arizona and Los Angeles, including a halftime show for the Phoenix Suns.
Sam has had the pleasure of collaborating with some of his childhood inspirations, including Timbaland and Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins which has provided him with the opportunity to write for artists such as Kehlani, Maroon 5, and Chris Brown. Sam has explored various musical genres, ranging from country to EDM, including a collaboration that received recognition from Black Coffee on a track with the South African duo Kususa.
Sam’s creative curiosity draws inspiration from a diverse range of artists, including Labrinth, Jon Bellion, Frank Ocean, and Beethoven. His music blends the styles of Khalid and Burna Boy, with a touch of Andre 3000. “Kofi” is Sam’s Ghanaian name, which he wears proudly on his chest like his favorite hero- Superman. KofiSzn is here.
