Melany Watson (SESAC)

Abe Olman Scholarship, 2015

Hers is a voice wrapped in intricate lace; soulful as the first quiet Sunday after a broken heart, and powerful as the words that give healing a welcome home. Spending her formidable years performing the southeast Texas Opry circuit in the mother/daughter duo “Melva Lee and Melany,” Melany’s discovery of The Bodyguard soundtrack proved to be a pinnacle moment in her transformation from self-described “choir nerd” to discovering her ultimate dream. Blending the best from her musical heroines (the rawness of Etta James, vocal acrobatics of Whitney & Mariah, vivaciousness of Chaka Khan, and universal writing style of Carole King), Melany developed her own brand of performance and songwriting style. In the summer of 2012, our sweet southerner followed her whims and up and moved to New York City. Shortly thereafter she became a regular performer in the NYC music scene playing Knitting Factory, Bowery Presents and the LES favorite Rockwood Music Hall. This east coast momentum flew her across America to become a Top 100 Finalist on NBC’s Season 6 of The Voice. She has been privileged to perform on national television shows such as Christmas at Belmont on PBS with Trisha Yearwood, and most recently on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon singing background vocals for Youtube Pop star Tori Kelly. While currently a staff vocalist for Vamnation and a professional plus-size model, Melany is in the studio writing and co-producing her next project due out in early 2015.
