Lily Lu Gilbert

NYU Steinhardt Songwriting Scholar Award, 2024

Lily Lu Gilbert is a 20-year-old singer-songwriter in her sophomore year at the NYU Steinhardt’s Contemporary Songwriting and Production program. Born in the UK, she grew up in Italy and Louisville, Kentucky, where she began writing songs at the age of four. She plays the piano and the guitar and is working on learning the fiddle.

An avid reader, Lily finds inspiration not only in contemporary musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Tyler Childers, Hozier, and Charles Wesley Godwin, but also in authors like James Baldwin and E. M. Forster. Storytelling is her specialty, and she uses her powers of empathy and observation to investigate and imagine the lives of others in insightful, surprising, and often heart-wrenching ways.

Along with pursuing her bachelor’s degree and performing around New York, Lily is currently working on a series of songs to be released as an EP in late 2024.
