Carmen Thomassiny

Bill Withers Scholarship, 2025

Carmen is a songwriter, composer, arranger, and performer based in the LA area. Growing up in South Florida, she developed a love for fusion music as she studied an eclectic variety of genres including but not limited to Classical, Jazz, Rock, R&B, Soul, Alternative, Pop, and Funk. Due to her wide variety of genre study in her early musical journey, she now writes music in styles of Contemporary Jazz, Neo-soul, R&B, and Psychedelic Rock with influences of Pink Floyd, Duke Ellington, Pat Metheny, Yebba, Brad Mehldau, Patrice Rushen, Erykah Badu, Robert Glasper, Mac Demarco, Kansas, and more. Carmen has dedicated herself to pursuing a vision that she believes is much bigger than herself by creating art that connects, inspires, and allows audiences to find their own unique inner purpose. She does so by including meaningful life topics in her songwriting that additionally reflect her personal life experiences. Her dream is to bridge the gap between current and historical popular music by including instrumentational sounds from multiple genres. This desire also stems from her lifelong love of film soundtracks that she states is ‘the most free and emotional music we have’ in its infinite range of musical opportunities to fit what’s on screen. Now as a student at USC Thornton, Carmen is working towards achieving a vibrant career full of collaboration in the arts including film, visual arts, composition, arranging, performing, and multiple other creative avenues. She was recently featured on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts.
