The Songwriters Hall of Fame (SHOF), in collaboration with the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development, announced today the establishment of The SHOF Songwriting Scholars. Generous grants from the SHOF and performing rights organizations ASCAP, BMI and SESAC will make it possible for seven students to receive full scholarships to the NYU Summer Songwriters Workshop. The program is an eight-day intensive seminar to be held at NYU Steinhardt June 18-27, 2012.
“We are delighted to expand our scholarship program, in partnership with NYU Steinhardt,” said SHOF President/CEO Linda Moran. “The Workshop offers a unique and very rare opportunity for students to work closely with some of today’s most accomplished and respected songwriters. The Scholars program is a natural extension of our growing collaboration with NYU Steinhardt, which we began a year ago with the creation of the Songwriters Hall of Fame Master Sessions.”
The NYU Summer Songwriters Workshop will provide one-on-one sessions with faculty, detailed presentations on a wide variety of skills, tools, and strategies essential for working songwriters, interaction with renowned practitioners of the art of songwriting, and in-depth master classes with prominent members of the music community. Headed by Phil Galdston, NYU Songwriter-in-Residence and Workshop Artistic Director, workshop faculty will include Jonatha Brooke, Barry Eastmond, and Angela Hunte.
“Jonatha, Barry, Angela, and I are thrilled to be launching this exciting and innovative program together, and deeply appreciative of the support the SHOF, ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC will be providing to our students and the Workshop,” Galdston said.
The seven Songwriters Hall of Fame Scholars will be selected by the faculty from among the students accepted to the NYU Summer Songwriters Workshop. The application deadline is April 16, 2012. Further information is available here.
