Songhall Introduces The Songwriter in the Recording Studio

It was a cold, rainy day in NYC on Saturday, November 3rd - a perfect time for songwriters to get behind the recording console at a professional studio and learn some of the techniques and technical processes that add up to great sounding recordings. The event was hosted by David Greenberg who explained microphone choices, preamps and the ever confusing topic of compression in setting proper ratio and threshold levels. A song was created and recorded on the spot with full instrumentation including drums, bass, keyboards, guitar, strings, lead and background vocals.  Then each attendee sat at the board and “mixed” the song as they became aware of the importance of equalization and effects such as reverb.  Home studio set-ups for both the MAC and PC platforms were discussed specifically for the needs of each songwriter.

Seated: David Greenberg: Instructor. Front Row (l-r): Joseph Endozo, Sharon Swerdloff, Larry Cashion, MaryAnn Sussoni, Nina Leon, Kristen Rogers, Patrick Cartwright,Kim Darden. Rear Row (l-r): Scott Blechner, Louis Perez, Dan Cohen, Thomas Gayle.

Patrick Cartwright sits at the console mixing. Patrick flew up to NYC from Florida to attend this workshop!

Due to the overwhelming demand, this workshop will definitely be on our Winter 2008 schedule - stay tuned to songhall.org for more info!
