Song Skills Workshop w/ Arnie Roman
1 Day Intensive / 10AM-4PM / Saturday, November 28, 2009
OPEN TO ALL!

If you are a pop songwriter who thinks you trend towards country – or a country songwriter who trends toward pop – this workshop is a must! Arnie Roman has been able to write successfully in both worlds earning Top 10 records on all charts! This workshop welcomes the beginning songwriter along with the more experienced writer looking to take their craft to the next level. Popular songs of all genres will be analyzed and decoded to see how and why they work as hit songs. Melody, harmony and lyric will be discussed as individual elements and how they equal more than the sum of their parts in a well-written song. Songs by workshop attendees will be reviewed and all are encouraged to either bring their song recordings on an iPod or a CD. There will be a piano in the studio but we ask that you bring your own guitar if that is your instrument! Of course you are welcome to just listen and learn!

The Songwriter In The Recording Studio
Saturday, December 5, 2009 10 AM – 4:00 PM /1 Day Intensive Workshop

This 1 day intensive workshop held in a recording studio will focus on many aspects of the recording process as it directly relates to the songwriter. The goal of this workshop is to provide a better understanding of this process and will ultimately save studio hours and demo budget dollars while achieving the best results. Basic recording techniques—following a sound from a microphone to recorder to mixer to mastering—will be explained and demonstrated. The use of compression, limiters, EQ and effects like reverb and echo will be discussed. Each attendee will have a chance to sit behind the studio console and “mix” a song. The focus will be on the songwriter demo by asking important questions: Is the song ready? Does the arrangement and song-form work? Who is the song for (what artist or what genre)? How do you model a sound for your song? Who should sing it? What to look for in picking an arranger and recording studio? We will record a simple demo, as well as evaluate demos brought into the workshop. This includes listening to a current hit and decoding the sound. The technology of recording as it exists today allows for everyone to put together an affordable studio in their own home. Equipment lists via the FORUM will be provided along with discussions of home recording studios utilizing Pro Tools LE, Apple LOGIC and a computer.
