The Songwriters Hall of Fame was saddened to hear of the loss of one of its’ best friends and supporters, Clive Davis, the recipient of the SHOF’s 2003 prestigious Howie Richmond Hitmaker Award. 

A senior music executive for 60+ years, Davis left an extraordinary legacy and signed a great number of artists who gained success and recognition during his tenure at recording companies  — Columbia Records, president; Arista Records and J Records, both of which he founded; RCA Music Group, chair; BMG Music Group, chair and chief creative officer, Sony Music Entertainment. Dubbed “The Man With the Golden Ears,” for his ability to identify hits and for shaping the careers of generations of iconic superstars including Whitney Houston, Bruce Springsteen, Janice Joplin, Alicia Keys, Barry Manilow, Billy Joel, Sly and the Family Stone, Laura Nyro, Pink Floyd, among others.

The winner of four Grammy Awards and a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Davis was among the last of the visionary executives.  Widely known in the songwriting and music publishing communities for his passion of songs and songwriters,  he truly understanding their value.  

Davis passed at the age of 94 on June 22 at his Manhattan home. He is survived by his four children, Fred, Doug, Lauren and Mitchell, his eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren and his longtime partner, Greg Schriefer.
