The 17th annual Award and Induction Dinner of The National Academy of Popular Music/Songwriters Hall of Fame was held in New York City in 1986.
This year's six inductees included rock n' roll legends Chuck Berry and Buddy Holly (a posthumous inductee) as well as Jimmy Webb, Marvin Hamlisch, and Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. Award recipients included Mitchell Parish (the Johnny Mercer Award), Leonard Feist (the Abe Olman Publisher Award) and Jule Styne (the Board of Directors Award). The National Academy of Popular Music/Songwriters Hall of Fame was founded in 1969 by songwriter Johnny Mercer and publishers Abe Olman and Howie Richmond. The NAPM/SHOF is also devoted to the development of new songwriting talent through workshops, showcases and scholarships.
