Composer Ethelbert Woodbridge Nevin was born in Edgeworth, Pennsylvania on November 25, 1862.
Nevin’s early music study was with instructors William Guenther and von der Heide at the Williams Conservatory. He then attended Western University and studied with S. Austin Pierce, B.J. Lang and Stephen Emery.
He began his career as a pianist and teacher in Pittsburgh, PA and had his concert debut in 1886.
Mainly writing serious works for the orchestra or piano solo such as Water Scenes, The Quest, May in Tuscany and A Day in Venice, Nevin also experienced popular success with the hit standards “The Rosary”, “Wynken, Blynken and Nod”, “Little Boy Blue” and “Might Lak’ a Rose.”
Ethelbert Nevin died in New Haven Connecticut on February 17, 1901.
